MARCH 6 1100 (ALASKA) BRIEF UPDATE ON DUONG

As described in a Feb 24 post, Duong is very ill with cancer. He served in 2nd Platoon Co A 3rd/21st Infantry 196th Light Infantry Brigade, as did I. Having lost both legs in combat, his life has been quite a struggle. But, we have been helping him for years...a hand-driven cart, a concrete path, remodeling of his house, a well, a TV, a rice cooker, a water kettle, food, and more. At my request, Thong has been attempting to reach Duong via phone, with no success. Thua, another 196th Infantry veteran, lives but a short distance from Duong and might be an alternate source of information. Thong will continue his effort to follow Duong's situation.

Well, in a couple weeks I'll be on my way back to Vietnam to implement our 2024 humanitarian program. Many details have been worked out, but there will always be spontaneous undertakings. On landing at 8:30 AM Jan 18th, the smiling face of Thong (aka Damn Guide) will be waiting.   The first order of business will be to visit two 196th Light Infantry Brigade veterans, Duong, and Thua. Thong and I will assess their needs and react accordingly.  I also intend to visit the graves of Son and her mother, Lady The. Such history... The vision program is well underway, thanks to the efforts of Khanh, Chairman of Hearts for Hue. Preliminary vision screening has been accomplished in the rural schools of Quang Phu and Huong Van in order to determine which students are most in need of eyeglasses. JAN 28 7:30 PM (VIETNAM) LAC THIEN RESTAURANT

  Since 2015, I have always made it a point to stop at Lac Thien Restaurant here in Hue. It was founded in 1965 by a deaf mute and is a landmark of sorts. They always remember and greet me with a hug. Lac Thien is known for the bottle openers that they make and give to patrons. With the Owner With the Owner, A Deaf Mute  In 2018 my daughter, granddaughter, and I went there and was told "Papa went to the moon." We walked upstairs to his altar to pay our respects. His daughters joined in making several bottle openers for us. I offered to pay, but they insisted that their papa would not approve of taking payment.   I really miss interacting with the owner, who had a great sense of humor.
